Poetry Dinner

Monroe House

"Light Verse: The Camel's Nose in the Tent"

Join us when the Arts Club offers a guided discussion of poetry during a dinner with local author J.D. Smith. British poet Gavin Ewart once said, "Good light verse is better than bad heavy verse any day of the week.” Still, even as funny poems are often a highlight of readings, they have virtually disappeared from the offerings of prestigious magazines and presses. Smith explores examples of his own and others' light verse and discusses why it deserves a larger audience and may help to expand the audience for poetry in general.

Smith's fourth collection of poetry, The Killing Tree, was published in 2016, and in 2007 he was awarded a Fellowship in Poetry from the National Endowment for the Arts. His other books include the humor collection Notes of a Tourist on Planet Earth (2013), the essay collection Dowsing and Science (2011) and the children's picture book The Best Mariachi in the World (2008).

No technical expertise required! Copies of poems will be supplied that evening, so bring your reading glasses. Literary Chair Sandra Beasley will host and moderate.

$50 per person / $90 per couple, which includes a three-course meal and wine. This event is for Club Members only and their guests. Seating will be capped at twelve, so please register early if interested. RSVP at (202) 331-7282 ext. 3or email us.
