In a small island in Indonesia, a wooden house balances on stilts over a churning sea. In this house Reverend David Holiday tries to convert a skeptical young local whose fate has become improbably intertwined with his own. At stake this night is the life of the young man’s father, the future of this island’s ancient culture and the happiness of an American family caught between worlds. As the night turns into morning, the fate of David’s haunted young son becomes the biggest question of all.

Laura Zam: Laura Zam is an award-winning writer, speaker, performer, trainer, and coach whose work has been covered by NPR, ABC-TV, and media outlets around the world. Her personal essays and other writing have appeared in Time Out Prague, Velvet Magazine and a host of publications in the U.S. and abroad. Described by the Washington Post as “smart,” beautiful,” and “funny,” her one-person play Collaterally Damaged has toured the United States, raising money for genocide survivors. Other one-person plays have been seen at The Kennedy Center, The National Theatre, Shakespeare Theatre, Off-Broadway, internationally. Her newest play Married Sex was recently commissioned by Theater J and will be read there in early 2012. As an extension of her art activities, Laura has taught storytelling and performance to post-trauma populations, including teens from the Middle East, soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, and women who’ve been sexually abused. Recent projects include a performance she created at the DC Rape Crisis Center. Through her company Laura Zam International, she offers storytelling and presentation training to businesses and organizations. Laura is the recipient of numerous awards, including an Artist Fellowship from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities and a grant from the Soros Foundation. Gwydion Suilebhan is the author of Buggy & Tyler, Reals, The Constellation, Cracked, The Faithkiller, Abstract Nude, Let X, The Treeehouse, and The Great Dismal. His plays have been commissioned, produced, workshopped, and read by Theater J, Ensemble StudioTheatre, Source Theater Festival, Active Cultures, Rorschach Theatre, HotCityTheatre, Midtown International Theatre Festival, Capital Fringe Festival,Maieutic Theatre Works, Towne Street Theatre, Intentional Theatre Group, and Theater of the First Amendment, among others. He is currently serving as resident playwright for the Taffety Punk Theatre Company. He blogs about theater for HowlRound, Stage Directions magazine, 2am Theatre, and at www.suilebhan.com.
Otis Ramsey-Zöe: Otis Ramsey-Zöe is a Professor of Theatre Arts at Howard University, Future Classics Program Coordinator at The Classical Theatre of Harlem, Series Editor for NoPassport Press’s Dreaming the Americas Series, a freelance dramaturg, and a Company Member of banished? productions. He has developed new works with such organizations as The Sundance Institute, Kennedy Center, Arena Stage, CENTERSTAGE, White House Historical Association and Black Women Playwrights’ Group and by such writers as Colman Domingo, Tarell McCraney, Noah Haidle, Kirsten Greenidge and Tim Acito. He has directed readings including David Emerson Toney’s Kingdom, Jacqueline E. Lawton’s Blood-bound and Tongue-tied, Marisa Wegrzyn’s Killing Women and Simon Levy’s What I Heard About Iraq (a cry for 5 voices). Previously, he was Literary Manager and First Look Coordinator at CENTERSTAGE and an Allen Lee Hughes Dramaturgy and Literary Senior Fellow at Arena Stage. Mr. Ramsey-Zöe holds degrees from New York University and the University of Notre Dame.
2011 Competition Information
Information About the One Act One awards

The Awards: $500 awards to the authors of an outstanding one-act play and the first act of a multi-act script.
Entry deadline: July 31, 2011.
Script Eligibility: All submissions must be:
• Original one-act plays or the first act of an original multi-act play
• Unpublished and not produced (not staged for a paying audience) as of the date of entry
Deadline: Submissions must be postmarked between the dates of April 1 and July 31, 2011 with the winner announced on October 1 on the club’s website.
Entry Fee: Each submission must include a $25 per play entry fee. Please make checks payable to the Arts Club of Washington.
Preparing Your Entry:
- Submit the ACW Play 2011 Entry Form
- Only one play per author will be considered in each category
- Send five copies of the entry
- Only stage plays will be considered. Film and TV scripts will not be accepted
- The author’s name should not appear on these scripts
- A brief synopsis of no more than one-half page must be included with each script, as well as the cast of characters (dramatis personae)
- Your synopsis should briefly state the theme and tone of the play. Synopses are used by theatre producers and readers, and are often drawn from for publicity purposes.
- Each submission must include a $25 per play entry fee. Please make checks payable to the Arts Club of Washington.
- All scripts should be legibly typed, firmly bound and of 8 1/2 x 11-inch size. All pages must be numbered.
- Submit the synopsis, and the author’s name and address, on a separate sheet.
- Scripts will be returned only if accompanied by a manuscript-size, self-addressed, stamped envelope. Do not use metered postage on the return envelope.
- Scripts may be held until the winner is announced on October 1, 2011.
- Scripts will be judged on concept, dramatic action, characterization, dialogue, and technical requirements. Critical analysis of scripts will not be provided.
- Experience has shown that judges are favorably inclined toward scripts that have a running time of 20 to 50 minutes and where scenes are few.
Information for Authors:
- All production and publication rights remain the property of the playwright.
- The Arts Club of Washington shall have the right to produce selected scripts without payment of any royalties.
- The Arts Club of Washington reserves the right to withhold either or both awards.
- Prior to December 31, 2011, any production will be at the discretion of the Arts Club of Washington.
