The Arts Club of Washington is pleased to present our February 2018 Art Exhibition featuring works by the residents of the Lisner-Louise-Dickson-Hurt Home in the Monroe Galleries. The director of the LLDH’s art program, Chris Alvear will exhibit his work in the MacFeely Gallery. This exhibition is curated by Dr. Erich Keel.
About
The Lisner-Louise-Dickson-Hurt Home is the only long term care facility in the District of Columbia exclusively serving low and modest income seniors. Long before the designer boutiques and high-end shops began to populate the Western and Wisconsin Avenue corridors, the Home was setting the standard for meeting the needs of District of Columbia seniors unable to afford even the basic costs of housing, health care, nutritional, and psychosocial services so vital to their existence.
In 2007 a resident art program was established. The program strives to encourage those residents who do not consider themselves gifted with artistic talent to participate, thereby allowing each one to enjoy the positive effects of self-expression while experiencing a sense of usefulness and accomplishment. In spite of aging and health challenges, the Home’s residents have been inspired to follow in the steps of Matisse, who painted from his wheelchair until age 81, and Monet, who continued painting into his 80’s despite encroaching blindness.
The Home is recognized as a 501(c)(3) tax exempt public charity by the Internal Revenue Service and is the holder of a five star rating for excellence in care recently awarded by the Federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Further information about the Home can be found on its website, located at www.lldhhome.org.
Chris Alvear serves as the program’s Artistic Director. Chris works with a multitude of mediums including oil, acrylic, pastels and charcoal. Known to many for his Alvear Studio that was a landmark for many years on Barracks Row, his works have been displayed in local boutiques, hotels and galleries around the DC area.
