About the Artists

Richard Crozier, Plant on Cloche, oil on board (detail)

Richard Crozier describes this is a selection of recent paintings as a collection of things seen around Charlottesville and some studies of the progress of growth in his garden.  ”I think that the process of continual change in these subjects is what attracts me to them both. It hadn’t been my intention to document Charlottesville’s evolving neighborhoods when I started painting here years ago; I was just trying to make the best paintings I could of the things I saw around me. Change has become clearer in retrospect, an unintended consequence of years of looking, revisiting places I’ve painted, watching as views disappear, or reappear.”

Robert Nelson, The Bird Sellers, drawing (detail)

Robert A. Nelson is a highly respected contemporary painter, sculptor, printmaker and collage artist. Nelson studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (B.F.A., 1950, M.F.A., 1951). He then taught at the Art Institute of Chicago as well as the University of Manitoba, Canada, and at the University of North Dakota. He furthered his education at New York University in 1971, receiving his Doctorate of Education. The following year, Robert Nelson began teaching at Cleveland State University, where he remained until 1975. He then joined the faculty of the University of North Carolina and later taught at Millersville University in Pennsylvania. On his retirement in 1997, Millersville granted him the rank of professor emeritus. Nelson currently lives and works in Lakeside, Oregon. Nelson’s work is in the permanent collections of many major museums, including the National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC, the Seattle Art Museum, the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The Museum of Modern Art owns three of his lithographs and two of his collages.

Nelson’s work has been the subject of over one-hundred and fifty one-man shows. His art has been included in important contemporary exhibitions in Washington, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Chicago. He also was the recipient of the prestigious Purchase Prize in the 31st National Exhibition of Boston Printmakers and was awarded the Cezanne medal from the government of France, in 1961.

Robert Nelson is a much-revered teacher and friend as well as an inspiration to many.
