History Hour on Eliza Monroe Hay, Eldest Daughter of President Monroe

December 5, 2025

The History Committee invites you to join a special one-hour program to hear a timely discussion on Eliza Monroe Hay, the eldest daughter of President Monroe, as a virtual Zoom program on Tuesday, December 9, from 5:00-6:00 pm (RSVP here).  We will hear first-hand from Barbara VornDick — a docent at the Monroe family’s Virginia home, Highland — whose far-reaching archival research over five years led her to publish a book telling Eliza’s True Story and to spearhead an international effort to ensure that Eliza’s legacy was properly honored. Eliza’s story has earned extensive recent media attention and is an important contribution to the Club’s deeper understanding of Eliza’s role in President Monroe’s legacy.
